Replace boot HD and Restore comp with Retail Ultimate

Posted: 02-24-2007, 12:55 AM
I have retail Ultimate and do full boot HD (C back up (back up computer) to
a USB HD. Lets say my boot HD (C fails and I then have to replace with new
unformatted (blank) HD. How do I do a full computer restore from the USB HD
to the new HD with no Vista (operating system) to start from?

Also should I do a full Backup computer each week or do a Back up files
every week?

No one knows the answer to this. Is there a way to use the Vista DVD to
restore the HD or do you need to make a restore boot type DVD/CD like Norton
Ghost does?

You use 3rd party software like Acronis True Image .............

I upgraded from Premium t6o Ultimate just to have the full HD backup feature.
Now you are saying it doesn't work?

If you used Complete PC Backup, you can start the restore by booting the
Vista DVD.

One is an image based backup, the other is file based. So you have to
decide what level of recovery you need. With an image everything is
restored. With the file backup you'd have to restore the most recent image
and then restore from all the file backups.

I do an image every night (though I use Acronis True Image 10 for this but
you can certainly use Complete PC Backup on a daily basis).

It works. I am not sure why pete posted what he did. Clearly he is lacking
some knowledge. Acronis True Image is good software, but Complete PC Backup
will work fine.

Here is one link with info on Complete PC Backup. How to do a restore from
the Vista DVD is at the end of the article. Google is a good tool. Google
for Complete PC Backup Windows Vista for this and other links.

Thanks Rock,

This is the info I needed. I will try a system boot from the Vista DVD to
confirm tomorrow. I guess the boot from Vista DVD file(s) are deferent from
the auto run file that start the install program from Windows. While it is
true I should have done a Goggle (aren't you MS and use Live?) search this
info should be included in Vista help.

You're welcome. I'm not MS, I'm just a user like you. I don't use Live;
Google is a standard, and very useful tool to get this kind of info. Help
and Support in Vista is great, too, but if it's not in there then my first
stop is Google.

Julien

That information is in Help and Support, just type Complete PC Backup and
you'll see the information. If you haven't tried the new help format in
Vista, take a look at it, it's much more complete than in previous versions.
