restore to factory condition crash "error loading operating system

Posted: 01-25-2009, 09:11 PM
I was attempting a complete restore to factory condition when a crash
occured. During reboot it stalls at a black screen reading "error loading
operating system". I
have no disk and am not sure how to proceed? It is a Sony Vaio notebook
running XP home with SP2 I believe. Thanks for any help

I would repeat the restore operation.

Thanks Pegasus, but I can't do anything because when I power up the unit it
freezes before windows loads. Thats where the "error" message ocurrs

With the notebooks I deal with, the Restore operation is initiated with a
factory-supplied CD. How is it initiated with your Vaio notebook? If it uses
different means then I would check the Sony FAQs to see if alternative ways
exist to commence the restore process.

David,

What model of Sony Vaio is it?

If it's one of the newer ones, it comes with a restore partition. You access
that by starting up the machine and pressing the F8 key. Choose the "Vaio
Recovery Center" option. Under that, choose "Restore C: Drive".

If you get it up and running again, I suggest the following: the notebook
may include a utility for making a recover disk (CD). If it does, make one,
and keep it in a known location. That may save the day in the future,
particularly if the hard drive fails. (The recovery partition would die with
it.)

I initiated it through windows xp while running normally. I have no disks. I
have tried contacting sony without much luck so far. Thanks for trying!

Usually PC's that have a hidden restore partion have instructions for
creating the restore disks, if you didnt do that and there are no means of
starting the restore, when you first attempt to re boot, then you would have
to contact Sony to see if they can supply disks.
Mind you if a crash occured first time arround that might suggest a hardware
problem, so a disk may not help.

perhaps, the issue that
initially attributed for you
to initiate a restore is
still the problem.

in any case, I would look
up faq's on restoration
from the laptops homesite.

there may also be a utility
from them that can diagnose
your disk.
