retrieving data from external hard drive

I have backed up a hard disk on a Maxtor 40GB external USB
hard drive. I checked the external drive to be certain
that the data was copied before disconnecting the drive.

After re-installing Windows XP on my boot drive, the
external drive now reads as not being formatted. Is there
a way of having Windows XP recognize the data on the
external hard rive? I keep getting the message that the
disk is not formatted.
