Right-clicking on a Novell Networked Printer Causes Windows XP to Crash

Posted: 12-05-2003, 08:11 PM
This does not happen on every Windows XP Pro machine, but on a large number. When right-clicking on a networked printer in the Printers, Windows crashes. Here are the details of the error

AppName: explorer.ex
APPVer: 6.0.2800.110
ModName: shell32.dl
ModVer: 6.0.2800.123
Offset: 0006ecf

The machines are all running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1. We are using Netware 5 as our NOS

Thanks

The explorer process is failing. What netware client software are you
running? Does this failure happen if the XP Client for Netware software is
used?

Thanks for the response. I have Novell Netware Client 4.82 SP3 on the machines. I uninstalled it to try to install the Microsoft Client for Netware, but when I went to add client, only Novell was there. Where can I point Windows to to get the Microsoft Client so I can test that to see if I have the same problem?

I checked a machine that has this problem, and one that does not. The explorer.exe files are both the same, 6.0.2800.1106, but the shell32.dll dates were different. The machine that is working correctly using 6.0.2800.1106, while the machine where the problem occurs is 6.0.2800.1233. I cannot confirm this to be the case on every machine that works or does not. I backed up the shell32.dll on the machine that was having the problem and replaced it with the older one from the working machine and it did not work. I thought this to be odd since they have the same service pack level, though another program may have replaced the file. I deleted the file I copied over and renamed the dll back to the original name so the system is back the way it was.

Thanks
Jason

To add the MS client
Open Network Connection
Right click on Network Card / Properties
Install / Client / Add
select Client Service for NetWare.

If it is not there, I do not know why it was removed.

Regarding shell32. The version released with SP1 is 1106. The 1233 version
is after applying the security updates (not sure which one).

Are you sure that System File Protection is not "fixing" the file when you
attempt to copy the new one?

From one of the guys who test Newtware connectivity

Subject: RE: Right-clicking on a Novell Networked Printer Causes Windows XP
to Crash

I havent' seen the crashing described, but I suggest if they want to use
Novell's client that they go to version 4.83. The only reasons that CSNW
won't show up in the list of network clients to install are 1) it's already
installed, or 2) netnwcli.inx doesn't exist (such as on XP Home systems).

I removed the Novell Client and was able to Install the Microsoft Client for Netware. I had to create a new profile for me and there were no problems right-clicking on the printers. I thought that maybe it was because I created a new user profile. So I reinstalled the Novell Client and in that same profile, did not have the problem. It looks like on many of the machines, for some unknown reason, the windows profile we used gets damaged. I will create new profiles on all the machines and hopefully the problem will be gone.

Thanks for everyones help!

Well, I thought that was it, but I forgot that the one machine that it worked on was the machine I was ultimately testing and of course it did not have trouble. Both with the Microsoft Client Service for Netware and the Novell Netware Client when right-clicking on the network printers, Explorer crashes and references shell32.dll.

Anyone have any more ideas?

Thanks,
Jason

Hi Jason,

I am having the exact issue on a new DELL machine running XP. Netware
has never run on the machine.Last week I installed the "suggested"
upgrades: SP1, and security patches. Inernet Explorer died five days
later.
The unrecoverable error are the same as yours:
AppName: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106
ModName: shell32.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2800.1233
Offset: 00095f7c

A quick internet search on 'ModeName: shell32.dll' gave me a few links
(which are below). I will write back if any of them actually fixes the
problem.
