Running Octave

I installed octave, the first time i tried to compile it and it was
installed. I was trying to calculate the roots of polynomials. for an
quadratic form, it just carried on processsing indefinitely without any
answers. but for single roots like 2x-1=0, it automatically returns 0.5

does anyone know what's wrong? i downloaded an rpm binary and tried
reinstalling it but it's still the same. i don't know how to remove
an installation if it was installed by compiling it (make install from
bzip or tgz)
