RC1 can be installed as a clean install or an upgrade of either XP SP2 or
Vista Beta 2. Upgrading from any other version of Vista is not supported
(meaning it hasn't been tested and the results of any such upgrade are not
of interest to MS.) Dual boot is certainly possible - I'm running four
installations on this one system, two XP and two Vista RC1 (one as a clean
install and the other an upgrade from another XP installation). Make sure
you don't install Vista on anything but a test system. Some people have had
trouble with dual boot and not been able to recover their other OS after the
failure.

USB boot devices are not supported in Vista. You can't do it. A USB hard
drive cannot be a boot device because Windows (including Vista) cannot boot
from a device on the USB bus. Such a capability is being pursued for the
next release of Windows (Windows Codename Vienna).
