Hi Kim,

Turn Off is the same as shut down. After you click shut down (or turn off),
Choose restart. Once you computer has shuit down and begun to restart press
F8. This will bring up a menu with the option to start in the safe mode.

Hit F8 repeatedly after your computer has restarted and is
booting up.

To start the computer in Safe Mode:

Go to Start->Shutdown(Turn off computer)->Restart->OK.
As the computer is restarting press the F8 key every three
seconds to open the Microsoft Windows XP Startup Menu.
Select Safe Mode with the UP/DOWN arrow key, press Enter
on the keyboard.

Help, Help.

My PC(XP) had a virus. I started safe mode and then
proceeded to delete the invected files, but now I cant
seem to get out of safe mode. Whenever I try and untick
the option box in system restore tab, it tells me that
this can only be done whilst not in safe mode - please
help before I take a hammer to this machine. GGRRRRR.

Cheers

I am something at a loss here, as one leaves safe mode
by rebooting and letting it do a normal boot.
Are you saying you cannot shut down from safe mode ?

I have done an msconfig and under the boot.ini tab I
selected /safeboot (minimal) and now when I re-boot the
computer it will not recognise my password or log in
normally. The PC is on a network and I had it syncronized
so it could be used offline with the same password.

I have Windows XP Home and I have an external E: drive
that I use for backup. It's a 40gb Iomega. I had to
reinstall my original software on my C: drive laptop
after a virus. The E: drive was unaffected. I can access
everything accept the "Owner" files on the E: drive. To
gain ownership of these files, requires that I get into
the "safe mode". This is necessary to have access to
the "security tab" in the folder properties. The
procedure to get into safe mode using the f8 key does
nothing. This may be Operator Error. What is the "exact
steps" to get into safe mode.

Thanks Michael
