Same as everyone else: Problem with Vista / XP network!

Posted: 03-28-2007, 04:52 AM
We have 5 machines (4 XP Pro, 1 Vista Home) on a small office network. There
is a shared directory on all 5 machines for an Outlook add-in called
"C:\osasync". The Vista machine can access this directory on all machines,
and the 4 XP machines can access each other with no problem. The Vista
machine shows up on all the other PC's, but it gives the "You do not have
permission to access this folder" error when clicking on the Vista shared
directory from XP. The folder is set to shared, and all permissions on this
directory have been manually set to full allow for all user types. Any idea
why it won't let an XP machine connect? No firewall being used, by the way.

Thanks!

I have the same problem, my Vista does not see CnfComputers.txt file in XP
despite files set to share and no firewall restrictions. My email to vaitia
was replied with a reference to this website where obviously there is no
solution yet.

Thank you.

We ended up punting OSAsync. WAY too much of a resource hog, and tech
support was horrid. Even when I finally got the computers to connect,
OSAsync kept fatally crashing all the PC's. Have since moved to a product
called Easy2Sync. It's in Germany, but the tech support is outstanding. A
bit trickier to configure, but so far it seems to be working fine. Much more
efficient than OSAsync. Web site is http://www.easy2sync.com. Good luck!

Just wondering if anyone has worked this out yet? I have a similar but
slightly different problem. Had an existing network with 4XP machines and
added a Dell lap top with Vista Business. XP machines can access files on
the Vista machine, but Vista machine requires a log in name and password when
none are set. The Vista machine also won't find shared printers on the XP
machines. Add to this... Just bought an ACER lap top with Vista Home and it
networked flawlessly. Anyone have any thoughts. Thanks for you time...

Hi Dan,

Networking a computer running Windows Vista with other computers running Windows
XP or earlier operating systems can be unbelievably complex. There is just no
one solution. Do you have a thread of your own, anywhere, describing your
individual problem in detail? If so, we can look at your problem, and maybe
both of us will learn from the experience.
