Unless the device is experiencing USB problems, all you should have to do is
plug it into your computer and XP would install the inbox driver for the
scanner itself.
I recommend you unplug the device from your computer and remove any software
and drivers also. Reboot. Verify the device is gone form your computer
(check out devman, My Computer, etc.). Next, with the scanner turned on,
plug it into your computer.
Did the PnP balloon show up saying it found a new device? If no - then your
device or the device connection to your computer is bad. If it does come up,
then XP should be installing the inbox driver itself. Wait a minute and then
see if the device show up in your My Computer and in the Device Manager. You
should be good to go from here, else your scanner might not be functional.
