Search is a disaster

Posted: 12-09-2006, 11:22 PM
Does anyone besides me find Vista's and MS Search for Office 2007's new
search functionality an absolute disaster for doing simple searches among
all files in a subdirectory based on filename or content?

The indexing makes search faster but at what cost? I feel like I'm writing a
software program just to get a simple search in a specific directory
accomplished.

I have been saying that from the first second I first layed eyes on that
disaster...

Vista and office and ie7 and wmp11 are all disasters.

Not that I liked ie6... but they could have done so much better for ie7...

the ribbon in office2007 is horrible,
the start menu, search, and windows explorer are totally stupid in vista..
(many other things too)
Ie7 toolbars are a big problem for many people
wmp11 had at least 10 big problems....

5 years development and millions of dollars for this trash?? YOU GOT TO BE
KIDDING!!!!

I didn't mean to encourage the trolls. I'm talking only about Search.

Really, how can I search in a specific subdirectory in Vista? The "Search
In.." field is a drop-down box rather than a combobox. The only way I know
how to do a search in a specific subdirectory is to start at C:\ and wait
for an hour, or else go into a command prompt and search with "dir /s" from
my subdirectory. Of course that's only for filename searches, not content
searches.

What am I missing here? Surely this is a pebkac error ... ? Is Microsoft so
stupid as to eliminate specific-directory searching?

What trolls...

I am just agreeing with you that the search is bad and that microsoft is
stupid for making the search like that.

The last good search I have seen, was in windows98.. believe it or not!

Vista is a beautiful OS and I'm happy about it for the most part.

I was just confounded by Search.

You're not going to accomplish anything by ranting about the whole OS or
about IE7. Way too broad of feedback for anyone to make use of.

Oh yeah.. scroll all the way down (I have a lot of network junk in the list)
and choose "Choose search locations..."

I'd found that before but forgot about it.

Still WAY too many mouse clicks and movements to accomplish the job when I
should have been allowed to just tab to the field and type it in without
using a mouse at all.

Jon

Go to Start/Search. In the Search dialog, select Advanced Search. In the Location drop down, you will see all of the choices there. You can select a drive or a specific folder.

Clearly you did not read my post. I was asking about subdirs, not drives.

I said,
> Really, how can I search in a specific subdirectory in Vista? The
> "Search In.." field is a drop-down box rather than a combobox.
... Said combobox I describe here is the same combobox as what you were
directing me to use. The options in the list (except for the last option,
which I just re-discovered and re-posted about before your post) are
arbitary and only drives or network shares.

Keystroke to remember:

(after Start menu -> search) ...
[tab] [tab] [space] [tab] [End] [tab]

Gah... better than a command prompt at least...
