Security Centre

Posted: 03-15-2007, 12:39 PM
From installing VISTA I have been obtaining the red cross on the security
centre icon in spite of updates, and defender being switched on. I was using
AVG Antivirus which may not have been recognised by the centre but that has
now changed.

I have installed Windows Live One Care, trial version, and during the
installation AVG was removed bit I am still getting the red cross in the
Security Centre while One Care is indicating the status as good.

Suggestions, please.

Reinstalling One Care should fix the Security Center issue.

Same thing happened with me today. Been running Vista Premium with Norton IS
without problems for about 5 weeks, then I see the red X. Security Center
tells me that I have no Firewall or AV (Both are included in NIS 2007 and
were running) and also the same defender problem already mentioned. Using
system restore worked.

I have the same problem Live OneCare shows green O.K. , WSC shows red.
Uninstalled Live OneCare and reinstalled - problem still exists.

Silly question but have you restarted your computer, not sure why but
sometimes defender won't start properly until a restart if it's been turned
off.
Make sure Security Center and Windows Defender are both enabled on the
services list (and any other services they depend on)

1. Click Start, All Programs, Windows Update.

If the update engine is taking you to Microsoft Update, you should change it
to Windows Update. To do this,

2. Click the "Change Settings" option in the left-hand pane.

3. Uncheck "Use Microsoft Update". (This can be re-applied later, after
Defender updates, by going to
http://www.update.microsoft.com/micr....aspx?ln=en-us )

Then try using Windows Update to download the Definition Update, by clicking
on Check for Updates.

Or try starting Windows Defender (Start Menu\Programs). If it starts, click
on the down-arrow to the right of the Help icon, and choose "Check for
updates". Let Defender check and download the update.

If Defender does not open, or if it opens, but doesn't download the update,
go to http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/

Under "Latest Definition Updates", choose your operating system type, 32-bit
or 64-bit, and try the manual download. Note here the instructions
pertinent to Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/ADL.aspx#top
