| I'm trying to set up a network, mainly for sharing a printer. The main machine is Vista home basic, connected to a Netcom router by network cable, and then to a cable modem. No problems with internet connection. The other three machines are XP, connected to the router wirelessly, no problems with internet connections for any of the XP machines. Thought I'd done everything - set up sharing on the Vista, allowed printer and file sharing without password, run the wizard, transferred the setting via USB stick to the other machines. All machines set to the same workgoup name. All machines are running some version or other of Norton Internet security, and Norton's firewall. No luck, none of the XP machines can see the Vista, the Vista can't find the XP machines. Any help or advice out there? I'm in real trouble if I can't get this working by the time school starts - we have an HSC student this year! -- Many Thanks for your help | Guest

| http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. How to give Permissions are there, too. If you are running Norton, etc’s Firewall, check its settings. 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer. Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard. "Befuddled" wrote: Quote:

| I have 2 PC's I want to setup on home network. My internet connection is satalight thru LAN port. My main PC is running Vista Premium--this is PC currently connected to satalight connection. The other PC I want to connect is runnig Windows XP Professional SP2. The PC's are in different rooms so I need a wireless connection between the 2. I know I need a wireless rooter and a card for the XP PC. But I am not sure if I also need a card for the Vista PC since this is the one that will be connected to satalight connection thru wired connection. Can anyone clarify this for me? Any recommendations on best router? I have concrete walls so I need something that I won't have too many problems maintaining the connection. | Guest

| I just setup my home network and here is how I did it: My main PC is connected to my Belkin Wireless Router. My Belkin Wireless Router is connected to my Broadband Modem. I have 2 other PC's connected (Hard Wired) to the Belkin Router. I wanted to have the speed with no degradation, so I went hard wire instead of the wireless route. I would suspect that the only thing you would change from the scenario above is for your remote PC. They would be connected through the wireless methodology. Meaning you would have to have either a wireless card or use a wireless USB. It would probably be easier just to buy a wireless connection via USB. I know Linksys makes them, since I have 1, but I am sure many others do as well. The reason I suggest USB, is it is easy to use. Just plug it into a USB port and away you go! Good Luck! | You don't need a Wireless card for the wired computer. But, you set up the wireless network through the wired computer. The manual, or software(CD), with your router will explain how to log into your router from the wired computer, and set up a wireless network. Once done, your computer with the wireless card, will pick up the wireless network. Make sure security for the wireless network that you have named, is at least WPA(Security Key) -- Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia "Speedy" wrote: Quote:
