Setting up PAN

Posted: 12-05-2005, 01:16 AM
Does anyone happen to have a how-to or the information handy on setting
up PAN for these alt.os newsgroups ? I'm wanting to use something else
other than the webbased interface. If anyone has a better suggestion
for such an application that would be great too.

I've been using Pan for about 5 years now and I don't remember how I
originally set it up, but I'll try to give some basics. It's really a
good newsreader, but documentation is almost non-existent.

1. Add a News Server by going to - Tools -> News Server -> Add
2. The view I like - View -> Tabbed Layout, Show Group Pane, Show Header
Pane, Show Body Pane, Thread Header Pane
3. Download Groups - Servers -> Get List of All Groups
4. Subscribe to desired Groups -> Open Groups tab, right click desired
group, Select Subscribe
5. To start a new thread while in a group, Post -> Post to Newsgroup
6. To reply to a post while viewing the body - Post -> Followup to
Newsgroup

That's the very basics to get started. Specifics can be provided as
needed. HTH

Larry,

Thanks for that info as well. Now that's it documented here I can surely
view it any time I might need it. You're certainly right about the
non-existant documentation. I searched and pan's own website says the
user information is Coming Soon! Heh, oh well. I'm up and running thanks
to all of you!

Maybe it has not arrived as it is not really needed. Still there is the
option of a user writing it

In the open source world one shares and one contributes what they can.

One of the biggest problems within the Open Source community is the *total
laziness* when it comes to providing any sort of adequate documentation.
There used to be a principle in the early days of programming that went
something like this ... first you write the documentation, then you write
the program. In the OSS world the reality is usually ... write the program
and the documentation be damned.

To have a mature offering such as Pan all these years and no documentation
is absurd. I've tried using that program but after struggling with its
complexity and lack of documentation just give up and go back to a Windoze
solution that I'm more comfortable with, although Pan apparently offers so
much more.

after struggling with its complexity....

What the fuck are you talking about?
its a news group reader. it requires three things
every human being can manage three things altough some
times it amazes some people can't even master cut and paste.

you need your news group sever's url, your user name and password.
And if you can remember your email you can put that in also.

What is so complex about that?

It's good the directions for eating ceral
is on the bottom of the box or some people would
never get breakfast.
