setup from DOS and winnt.exe

In the old days I could boot to DOS and run winnt.exe to kick-off a
Windows installation. I've read winnt.exe is gone for Vista, but I'm
wondering if it will still be possible to run a setup program for
Visat in DOS. I have not found an winnt.exe equivalent in Vista. I can
only get a fresh install by booting from the Vista DVD.

Right, yeh Winnt.exe has gone but I believe that you can't use DOS in
Vista... not sure if I'm 100% on that one... but I'm pretty sure there were
some major reforms in terms of using DOS. Might want to wait for another
reply on this one as I'm pretty foggy about it, but winnt.exe has deffo.

Text based setup has been replaced by WinPE - Windows Preinstallation
Environment. The only thing similarly close to DOS in Windows Vista is
probably the Command Prompt which is used to interface with MS DOS.

I don't understand why Microsoft can't (or won't) implement a full-fledged
VDM (Virtual DOS Machine) on the NT platform. There was one in OS/2 (version
3 and later, which was full 32-bit), and it simply used the Virtual86
environment built in the 386 and later processors... Since the code (both
for DOS and VDM) belongs to MS, there's no real reason not to add it besides
(or instead of) the crippled NTVDM.

Trying to start a Vista installation from DOS real mode doesn't mean running
DOS under Vista, it means booting DOS and trying to get a Vista installation
to start. This isn't exactly a frivolous request. Last month I had to play
this trick in order to reinstall Windows XP on a friend's machine. The BIOS
wouldn't boot a USB CD drive but would boot a USB floppy drive, the Windows
XP setup floppies would finish reading the 6th floppy and then BSOD instead
of reading the Windows XP CD, and I had to jump through a ton of hoops
before getting an installation to start.

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood. Still, the VDM request isn't frivolous either. I
have clients who're still running W95 because they have old software running
that doesn't have modern replacement.

will will be kicked off from windows PE now, there is no more starting the
install from dos as the installation files are all packed into a WIM
