Setup Stalled at "Setting up personalized settings"

Posted: 08-24-2006, 03:35 PM
Installing build 5472 under MS VirtualServer running on XP SP2.

Setup nearly completes normally, but then presents to the dialog:

Personalized Settings
Setting up personalized settings for:
Windows Desktop Update

The setup stalls here, and if left long enough, the desktop times out and
locks itself. I can click on my user icon to reactivate my desktop session,
but it remains stalled in the same place. I've left it here for a couple of
hours, but no progress.

Anyone else have this issue?

TIA,
Scott

How much ram are you allocating to the guest? btw you should lengthen the
delay for the timeout. I set mine to two hours (in the VS settings).

I've allocated 512MB to the guest.

I've also disabled the timeout feature in the VS settings.

But still, setup stalls at the "Applying Desktop Settings" dialog. The Vista
desktop will eventually timeout and do the lock workstation thing. Then I
click on my user icon, and the "Applying Desktop Settings" dialog is still
there, but no progress. I've left it for hours.

VS Monitor shows CPU activity, as if it's doing _something_, but never makes
progress. Task Manager on the host system show activity too.

Ideas?

BTW- the only reason I am going through this effort os to simply evaluate
vista before actually installing on any of my PCs...

I’m having the same problem. I’m installing into a Virtual PC 2004
instance with 256MB ram.

It has been on "Setting up personalized settings for: Windows Desktop
Update" for about 5 hours. (timing out and going back to login screen
a few times)

I’m using the July 2006 CTP

You should allocate a minimum of 512 MB of RAM, as this is the minimum
recommendation by Microsoft for any iteration of Vista. They also recommend
a minimum of 1 GB of RAM for a "Premium Edition" of Vista, which describes
Vista Ultimate. There are many instances of successful testing done with
only 512MB, however.
