"Shared Documents Folder" name changed to "Documents" after restoring backup

Posted: 01-28-2004, 04:23 PM
"Shared Documents Folder" name changed to "Documents"
after restoring backup of that folder's contents.

I cannot change the folder name back to "Shared
Documents" and receive an error when I try to do so.

I tried to rollback a system restore point, but this was
not successful. Any help or comments appreciated.

Thanks, but how do I go about restoring the desktop.ini file?

The folder is Read Only..

Are you saying the desktop.ini was corrupted during the restoration of the
data file stored in the Shared Documents Folder?

Thanks in advance

Thanks David Candy, but I've come to the realization there must be more to
the story than just having restored Shared Folder contents from a previous
install. As I suspect you're suggesting, I should have also restored the
Shared Documents desktop.ini, but I realize I never backed it up in the
first place, only my Quicken Folder/Files I was sharing.

Perhaps of interest here is that prior to re-installing Win XP, My Documents
had been relocated to a separate partition ( I thought as a safety
precaution in the even that I needed to do some drastic work on the Windows
partition - which I did!). I noticed some preliminary grumbling from
windows after the reinstall and not being immediately able to delete the
'old' My Documents folder on the non-windows partition. I then suspected
some conflict might have occurred with there now being 2 My Documents
folders for one user, one that windows just created at the default location
on drive C:, and the one I previously relocated to a different partition.

Of course I didn't pay it much mind at the time, until after I restored the
rest of my data from the \Documents and Settings folder (like Favourites,
Cookies, Outlook data files, Windows Address Books), and including my
Quicken Folder stored in the previous Shared Folder under \All Users. Well,
after this point I was able to rename and delete my old My Documents folder
on the separate partition, and that's when I also noticed the name and icon
change to the Shared Documents Folder to 'Documents'.

Not sure where I go from here. I already spent 2 days reinstalling windows
and office componenets, upgrading, patching and re-activating the software
over a dial-up service only to find I now have a problem of a different
nature. Wish I knew if it even mattered at this point, any thoughts?

Excuse the small rant.

It only the display name. If you were a freedom speaking person from Qubec or Paris it would display as Le Shared Docs (or whatever Shared Docs is in Freedom language) but the actual folder name (Documents)wouldn't change.

In other words it's no big deal. You can't use the display name in any technical sense (...\documents\... must be used not ...\Shared Documents\..., which will merely say Path Not Found).

It's normally a hidden and system file and your backup program may not do hidden files.
