Shared printer is not seen from another PC

Posted: 01-08-2008, 09:38 PM
I have two PCs, A and B. Printer connected to A is set up for sharing.
My problem is that the printer can not be seen from B. File sharing is
also set up with A so that the computer A and its shared drives are seen
from B but not the printer. Pass word protection is enabled at A. What
could be wrong?

If you do have file sharing setup and working, then the problem is probably with
the printer, or the drivers. Try setting up a local port, on the client
computer.

Let me add more info on the system involved: Both A and B are Vista
Ultimate machines and printer sharing once was working. The problem
began when the printer attached to A was replaced with a different
one(still same make, same series but different model). The printer is
working fine as a local printer.

The PC A is a dual-boot system and Windows XP was tried but the same
problem was observed. With the previous printer the PC B could also
share the printer when XP was running on A.

I have not tried the suggestion yet, but could the drivers for old
printer be the culprit? I deleted the old printer from the printer
windows but that had no effect. I am thinking of deleting the drivers
for the old printer. Any comment is appreciated.

PS: The is a problem of a friend residing in 6000 miles away and I have
to use Remote Assistance session to do the trouble shooting so that I am
pre-screening or prioritize what I will be doing.

Printer drivers are tricky. Printer drivers have to be specific to the printer
(dohh), to the system to which they are installed, and to whether the printer is
local to that computer. If you're using dual-boot, you'll need the right
drivers installed on each operating system involved. If you have old drivers
involved, that could be part of the problem.

When you installed the new printer, did you get the newest drivers for that
printer, from the vendor?

The drivers were installed from the CD which came with the printer(Epson
PM-G860). The driver are noted as MS certified for Vista as well as
XP/2000. The reason I mentioned the problem involving XP is that it may
help solve the present problem.
The following is what I will do:
1) Uninstall the drivers for the old printer by using a utility
2) Try printer sharing from B, and if it still does not work
3) Reintsll the drivers(newer version if available).

I will post back.
