Shares Net and Printer but not files

Posted: 06-14-2007, 11:20 AM
I have setup my new laptop with Vista Home so it now, successfully, shares
the printer with my Vista Premium PC AND successfully accesses the Net.
Also, the correct laptop name is shown in the Network folder on the PC.

However, when it comes to sharing files and folders, I am getting the
message that `Windows (on the PC with router attached) cannot communicate
with the laptop`and Network Diagnostics suggest I get in touch with my ISP
or hardware router supplier. Very puzzling as it is ALREADY SHARING, quite
happily, with the printer and surfing the web!

My network consists of a PC, an already established second laptop and now
the new one. Everything is correctly connected and working OK with the
second laptop on my little network. So, why am I having a problem with my
new addition?

I think you mean that I should click on the link \\laptopipaddress However, with this new Vista software, I have just discovered that the links in the email program are not working. Can't figure out how to correct this problem. Can you help me with this please, even though it is not the right newsgroup? Thanks.

Assuming the laptop ip is 192.168.1.2, do this command: net use \\192.168.1.2 from the desktop. Post back with the result.

You need to got to a command prompt in admin mode then enter the string containing the command word netuse followed by a space two backslashes and the laptop's ip address.

I typed the command net user \\192.168.1.2 in the search box and came up with a 'couldn't find' window. As my IP string finishes with 2.1 I tried that too, with the same result. As for being in administrator mode, I am the only user of notebook and I am not sure how I get into this mode?

I did exactly what you told me, but when the Command window opens it is
empty, all I get is
c:\Users\ros - nothing to scroll!
