Sharing A Network Connection

Posted: 10-22-2007, 11:21 PM
I'm a total dummy about networks and such so I hope this doesn't come across
sounding ignorant. We have a cable connection on a computer with XP, trying
to share the connection through a 5 point hub with a computer with Vista and
no luck. I've talked to the company that makes the computer and the cable
company twice and neither can help me. Is there any website or anything that
can walk me through this step by step? Any help if very much appreciated!!
Thanks.

Are you trying to get both the computers to browse the internet?

Yes. At this point, one is able to access the internet and one is not.

What you want to do is get a router.
Like a Linksys, Netgear, or DLink.

What this will do is allow you to connect as many computers you want behind
the router.

The cable company only issues you one IP address, so only one computer can
get out on the internet.

Most of these routes will also have a switch built in, which will be faster
than the hub you have.

Hope this helps,
