Default sharing applications and programs

How do you set it up so you can get to programs and applications from one
machine to the other? I would like to work on various software programs that
are on my desktop from my lap top and don't know how to allow these programs
to be shared. Does it make a difference that my PC is XP and my laptop is
Vista?
TIA
Jann
