SHARING a USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Posted: 10-14-2003, 07:41 PM
I have an external USB 2.9 hard drive that I want
to share on my home network. Using simple file sharing
I am able to share the drive on machine A but when I try to
access the drive from machine B I get the following
error message:

"\\dickfic\80gb (J) is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use the network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access
permissions.

Not enough server storage is available to process this command."

If I move the external drive from machine A to B and share the drive
on the B machine and access from the A machine I get the same message.

I have been able to reproduce this problem on 2 different machines on
2 different networks.

Does anyone know if

1. can usb hard drives be shared on a network?
2. Is there a fix for this problem that I am not aware of.

It really is a shame that you had to post to so many newsgroups to attempt
to get your request answered. If you are going to post in so many groups at
least crosspost (not the right thing to do) so answers will show as read in
all the groups visited. If I had seen the post here and in ...xp.hardware I
wouldn't have responded with information in ...xp.general.

I answered you in 21 minutes and Yves Leclerc answered you in only 6
minutes. You even posted the ...xp.hardware post AFTER Yves gave you the
correct answer.

I'm sorry my post annoyed you, but I felt that my chances of getting
an answer would be better if I posted to 3 or 4 groups.

I appreciate the replies and for the most part, I agree to some of
the replies. However, I specifically said I was using Simple File
Sharing.

Simple File sharing doies not require an account on the machine that
is sharing the drive. I can get to my C and D drives with no problem
from the B machine without a user account for B on the A machine.
To further illustrate that it works, I attached a Firewire drive to
the A machine, shared it, and then was able to access it just fine
from the B machine.

The issue seems to revolve arounf the fact that it is a USB drive.

This can be duplicated on 2 different machines in entirely different
parts of the country and the same error message is always given for
the USB drive. Firewire drives have no problem
