Shifting Text and Overlapping Characters in PDF

Posted: 08-14-2006, 09:58 PM
Some of my co-workers are finding that some of the PDFs exported out of InDesign CS2 have text problems. Some sentences aren't aligning to the margin along with others, but instead are indented into the paragraph. Also, some characters are squashed together, overlapping one another creating gibberish. The InDesign file is fine with none of these occurrences.

Has anyone had problems with type shifting and characters overlapping in PDFs exported out of InDesign CS2? We use Acrobat 7 Professional and some people are on Mac OS X Tiger while others are still using Panther.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I'm having the exact same problem here.

Any chance to post a screenshot here of what it looks like in ID and another one from the appearance in Acrobat?

Disclosing the PDF export setting you're using to the forum could help also.

We are seeing a specific issue related to this, but it is limited to viewing our PDFs on a PC in Acrobat 6 (full version and reader). They work fine on Mac in 6 and 7, and fine on PC in 7, just not 6.

We are doing something unusual: we do all page layouts (multi-language text and illustrations) in Illustrator, then use InDesign simply as a page collector. We have been using EPS, but recently switching to AI did not solve this problem. And yes, we did not have this issue until using InDesign CS2.

Did anyone arrive at a solution?

Save as PDF from AI. Then use Acrobat to combine the pages.

I have experienced a similar problem with PDF font issues after being converted from InDesign CS2. However my problem was exactly that - conflicting versions of fonts. So I had to go back in to Suitcase and turn of the problem fonts and everything was OK. I take it you have done the find font step before exporting to PDF?

Cheers

We do have quite an array of fonts that could be in conflict (most likely to conflict: Helvetica truetype from Apple vs. Helvetica Postscript from Adobe...perhaps vs. Ariel truetype from Microsoft). Since we are supporting many languages and sharing source files and fonts with translation vendors we don't have the luxury of cherry-picking or buying better fonts. Nevertheless, we are even seeing this in English-only versions of these booklets.

This only affects our web versions for PCs using Acrobat 6 (for press we outline everything). Bob's suggestion will work, but it's high-touch, so reverting to InDesign CS1 is probably our easiest fix. Nevertheless, bummer that CS2 isn't more robust.
