Shortcuts in Dialog Boxes

Posted: 11-21-2003, 09:35 PM
I'm new to XP, and I'm having problems with shortcuts.

In Windows 2000, I could save a file to a deep network
path by double-clicking a local shortcut in the "Save As"
dialog box. In XP, the shortcuts don't appear, so I have
to navigate all the way to the network folder I want to
save the file in.

Similar problem in the "Open" dialog box. I can now see
the shortcuts, but when I double-click the shortcut I get
this error message: "The document name or path is not
valid." XP seems to think I'm actually trying to open the
*.lnk file in my application!

Any insight or assistance is appreciated.

--PLACES BAR

1) For XP Pro...

[Start]
| Run |
gpedit.msc
[Enter]

Local Computer Policy
- User Configuration
- Administrative Templates
- Windows Components
- Windows Explorer
- Common Open File Dialog
"Items displayed in Places Bar"
(*) Enabled
Items to to display: {1} - {5}
[OK]

2) For XP Home or XP Pro...

Via TweakUI (for XP). If this is not
installed on your system, then download it from http://
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../powertoys.asp

Note: V2.10.0.0 needs Windows XP SP 1

If you do not have SP1, the earlier version of TweakUI
can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install
/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

In TweakUI, navigate to...
- Common Dialogs
- Places Bar
(*) Custom Places Bar
{1} - {5}
[OK]

I can now see the shortcuts, but when I double-click the
shortcut I get this error message:

"The document name or path is not valid."

XP seems to think I'm actually trying to open the

Jan,

Thanks for replying. I'm happy to know about the Group
Policy settings, but that's not what I was referring to.

I ask whoever is willing to perform this simple test:

1.) In your My Documents, create a folder called "TEST"

2.) Create a desktop shortcut to the "TEST" folder -- it
will be named "Shortcut to TEST"

3.) Open Notepad (for this example)

4.) In Notepad, choose File > Save As; you now see
the "Save as" Dialog Box

5.) In the "Save in" dropdown near the top of the "Save
as" Dialog Box, choose "Desktop"

Now, do you see your "TEST" shortcut? I don't. In
Windows 2000 I did -- I could double-click the "TEST"
desktop shortcut, and I'd be taken to the "TEST" folder
under My Documents.

6.) In the "Save as type" dropdown near the bottom of
the "Save as" Dialog Box, choose "All files"

You should now see EVERYTHING on the Desktop. But try
double-clicking on "Shortcut to Desktop" -- Windows thinks
you want to save your file as "Shortcut to TEST.lnk"!

I cannot figure this out. If nobody else is having this
problem, then maybe it's time for me to backup my system
and reinstall XP.

Thanks for your time.

Works okay here. Sorry I don't know why it's not working for you.
