Should I have gone for Vista64 with a 64bit processor?

Depends on what supporting hardware you have. I've been running both x86
and x64 versions at my shop and neither have more problems than the
other. The only downside I see to Vista is the lack of support, not just
the x64 edition.

If you have an ATI crossfire, nVidia nForce 3/4/5, Intel based mother
board, go for it. They have great support.

As far as benefits, the 64 bit platform offers so much more over the 32
bit. Like hardware Data Executive Prevention (DEP), virtualization,
larger amounts of both physical and virtual memory. Most of these
features need an OS that can support them, like Vista x64. The 32 bit
version of Vista may not support such features.

As far as less hardware support, you won't really find any less support for
x64 as with x86. You're going to have a lot of problems with most things
just using Vista in general, so...

Any? At least one example:
My Canon iP4200 - a well sold printer! - works with WinXP driver on
Vista Beta 2 x86 whereas it doesn't on x64.
(And there is no WinXP_x64 driver on the Canon support site.)

First of all, to say that the Canon iP4200 is a "well sold printer" is
extremely misleading. I would not consider a printer that has sold 11,000
models as "well sold" but to each his own.

Secondly, as of January 12, 2006 the *LATEST* version of the Windows XP Pro
x64 driver can be found in the same way as you get any drivers from the
canon support site. (The 1st XP Pro x64 driver listed was released Oct05)
Follow the link below and it is 3rd down on the list after clicking on
"Drivers / Software". The list is Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition. Note that the driver version is the same version
as the Windows XP version. Considering the way that Canon releases their
driver versions, this means that they have had the x64 driver v1.90 for as
long as they have the XP x86 version 1.90. As someone who is handed info
from canon constantly for reviews, I thought it odd that, after reading your
post, I didn't even have to log-in to my admin account there to find the
driver you mentioned. It's actually easier to see on the webpage than the
x86 XP driver is. From the email I received via an aquaintance, the x64 XP
driver does work with slightly older version of Vista beta2 x64. (She
wasn't aware of whether it would work with the latest though.)
