Shut down when lock up!

and the screen saver shut down but my desktop did not
launch. It froze so I did alt-ctrl-del. Still froze so
I shut of the notebook. When it restarted my desktop was
gray and my icons were shadows. I tried restore at an
earlier date but nothing. I tried resetting the icons
one by one but they would not change. Is there help for
this problem. All my programs and files work and the
icons launch the proper programs.
