My computer keeps shutting down when left idle. I have
tried to adjust the power settings so that it never
shutdowns or hibernates, but it still shuts down. What
am I missing?

When shutting down my computer, it often stops at the
blue screen where it says "Windows is now shutting
down...". Any ideas what could cause this?

Troubleshooting shutdown issues:

Also, the next time you use the newsgroups, please don't use your email
address in its pristine state. At least jumble it such as ckfaires ATSYMBOL
cox DOT net so that the applications/people looking for an address to start
spamming you with have a harder time.

Shutdown

Computer reboots often. It happens a lot while I am on the
Internet. I get a message that tells me to save my work,
that the system terminated unexpec-tantly and will shut
down. The message tells me that a "Remote Procedure Call"
was created and I have seconds to save before a reboot is
performed.
This problem seems to occur most often while I am on the
net.

Often times when I try to open a file the system give me a
blank "blue screen" and ends the program or closes the
folder that I was trying to open.

The above problems are getting worse. Help!

There are thousands of nasty computer viruses/worms looking for unprotected
computers. Your computer can be infected within a few milliseconds the moment
an internet connection is established if your computer is not properly secured.

Apparently, your computer is now infected with the W32.Blaster.Worm or one of its variants.
This happened because you have not been using an internet connection firewall and have
apparently neglected to install the critical updates available at the Windows Update website.

------------------------------------------------------------------

If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown
or reboot, quickly go to:

Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
This opens the Command Prompt window.

Then type: shutdown -a , and hit enter.

This should halt the rebooting problem.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Then immediately turn-on Windows XP's built-in Firewall:

What You Should Know About the Blaster Worm and Its Variants
http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

A tool is available to remove Blaster worm and Nachi worm infections from computers
that are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=833330

A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to
remotely compromise a computer running Microsoft Windows and
gain complete control over it. You can help protect your computer
by installing this update from Microsoft.

>Windows XP has a built in firewall, but this is disabled
by default. You have probably been infected by the
blaster worm before you got the critical updates, that's
what happened to me. Follow the advice of Carey Frisch,
and you will be sorted. Alternativly, start computer,
with firewall up, get to Windows critical updates, very
quickly, start the download, if windows reeboots, keep
going to critical updates, eventually you will get them
all, it may take frequent attempts, and be frustrating,
but keep doing it. Don't use a system restore point from
before you get rid of the worm, or you will get it back.
