shutting down

In my windows 98se program when I selected shutdown the
computer closed the program and turned off my computer. In
my XP program when I shut down I have to manually turn off
my computer. Is there some way in the program to shut off
the computer at the end or is this something that is in
the bios of similar setting? Any help would be appreciated.

sure, your computer has to be configured to use advanced
power settings. to do this, go to control panell,
performance and maintinance, them power options and
configure it from there. also make sure you have aps
enabled in the bios.

How can I make XP sp2's cursor default to the "turn off" button instead of
the "stand by" button when I am trying to shut down. When I hit Start...Turn
off Computer the cursor always goes to Stand By. I want it to go to Turn Off.

TIA

Have looked into that one, but not enough, it seems.

Press "T" in the dialog window. You cannot change the default, but
this may help for you.

thanks--unfortunately cold and rainy now.

I don't see the widespread appeal of Stand By being the default. It would
seem that Turn off is mostly what people going to that window want.
Is it possible the create a desktop shortcut that with one click shuts the
machine down?
Is there maybe a registry setting that would change the default?

John,

Create a shortcut with target:
%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0
