With a game port device on Windows XP, you need to plug it in, then go into
Control Panel/Game Controllers and "Add" it. The Microsoft SideWinder (auto
detect) devices can be chosen by selecting that line. XP already has the
drivers included, since the old .vxd format those controllers used is no
longer supported.

What you cannot do with the game port controller on XP is program the
buttons from within Game Controllers. You need to rely on in-game Options
to do that.

Tried your suggestion but still get message -controller
not connected correctly-.
On bottom of joystick there is a slider with one dot on
one side and two dots on the other- not sure where it
should be. thanks

Those dots are to emulate a different brand controller, and I don't remember
right off the top of my head the name. I'm sure someone will pop in here
with the answer.

I would try updating either the card where the game port resides, or look
into a motherboard update. Generally, if the game port device isn't seen,
like on a sound card, the drivers for that card need to be updated.

Is the microsoft sidewinder 3D pro compatible with windows
XP? It appears in the web pages that I've looked at that
only Windows 95 and 98 support it. How can this be? Why
wouldn't an new version like xp support your hardware?

If that is the game port version, go to Control Panel/Game Controllers with
it plugged in and Add it under Microsoft SideWinder (Auto Detect). You no
longer can install the old .vxd format software because THAT isn't
supported. You also need to rely on in-game Options to program the buttons,
etc., but the controllers work fine.

Did you try letting the system install it, Dave, without the software?

yup, I had win 98 first and the game port worked fine but needed to install
drivers from the disk . U/G to XP I tried the game port without success,
then attached the usb adaptor and plugged it in. picked it up fine no
drivers to install it was just plug and play. no problems ever since
