Cant get it to start past the protection, have downloaded a patch for it from
starforce but the patch cant find the protection file any one have a similar
problem?

Help please. I'm tring to update (downloaded the patch) but it says the
main.cfg version file is unknown.
Any ideas?

If you've got any mods installed make sure they're out of the way, you might
want to uninstall SH3, delete Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII,
reinstall and then try again.
