slow access to desktop after logon

XP OS running on a Dell GX240, 1.6 Ghz with 512 Meg RAM.
After entering password and pressing enter, can take 45
counts or more before the desktop is shown. After this,
machine runs with no problems. Any ideas on what's
causing this delay?
