Slow access to SATA drive

Posted: 12-23-2006, 01:58 PM
Hi,

I've just installed the release version of Vista Ultimate. I did a clean
install, formatting the C drive (80 GB SATA). Everything works fine.

Now, I have a second drive: Maxtor 250 GB SATA 2 (AHCI). When I access it
from Vista, I have some delays accessing the drive: sometimes it works fine,
sometimes I have to wait a minute or two to get an answer.

I mounted the drive on a XP SP2 system, it worked perfectly. So I backed it
up, and put it back on the Vista system. I reformatted it, but still have
the sort of timeout problem.

Any suggestion is welcome.

Gerard.

Check your power settings to be sure you don't have drives set to spin down
after a timed amount of inactivity.

Thanks for the suggestion, but this is not the case: I click on a folder, it
works fine, then I click on another folder, and I might have to wait one or
two minutes...

What was your time set to?

The first folder might still have been in Disk cache and would come up right
away whereas the second folder had to be retrives from the spun down disk.
