slow connection from vista home prem to sbs2003sp2

Hello - I connected a Laptop with Vista Home Premium to our Homenetwor
which includes several xp-workstations and a sbs2003 sp2. network is no
a domain but a workgroup. the laptop can connect to every workstatio
with normal speed but the connection to the sbs2003 is very slow. I
takes about 30 to 45 sec to build up every picture and filetransfe
takes days...
Are there any ideas or solutions arround?

There is no way to run SBS 2003 without it being a domain controller so you
do have a domain. The server will reboot every hour or so if it is not a
domain controller holding all the FSMO roles. Home Premium can't be joined
to a domain but you can access some of the domain resources on the server.
Make sure your username and password match a domain account. Make sure the
workgroup name matches the NETBIOS name of the domain. Make sure the Vista
client is using the SBS server for DNS resolution. Make sure the SBS server
has the updates for use with Vista clients and the Vista computer has the
updates for use with SBS.

The WMI update for Vista may not be needed for a Home client but I'd install
it anyway if it will install. If you are using ISA you will need the new ISA
client.

I'm with Kerry that the OP should try the updates to SBS to make it work
better with Vista. I just wanted to mention that it *is* possible to run
SBS and not elevate it to domain controller. It's a hacklet, so I'm
assuming the OP used it.

Hi Kerry and Malke - thank you for your input. Due to the matter that I
do have connection, but a very slow one, I already thought about a
registry entry myself which causes this effect. Something like a
intented brake from the big boss. I must admit that I'm not a pro in
these things. Do you have any idea to solve the matter?
For sure it will be solved with an upgrade on vista ultimate I think,
but that would be my 2nd choice.

I don't know what an "intented brake from the big boss" means, but both
Kerry and I suggested that you first go to the updates for SBS and do
any patching.

Follow the instructions in my first post paying particular attention to the
DNS settings on the Vista computer. Make sure the server and the Vista
computer are up to date with patches from Windows Updates. Work though the
second link in this post. If you still have a problem after that post the
results of ipconfig /all from both the server and the Vista client.

There is no "intented brake from the big boss". Vista Ultimate will allow
the Vista computer to join the SBS domain but it won't fix the networking
problem you are experiencing.
