Slow file Explorer for .jpg only

Posted: 11-30-2003, 11:49 PM
Hi,
I am facing the following problem with a fresh installed XP :

Displaying the folders that contain .JPG is very slow with my 2.4 Ghz cpu at
100%.
The file listing itself is very fast (listing mode), but every single
photoshop icon needs almost 1 second to display. During that time, it's very
difficult to take control. Imagine how it works when I have 1000 of them in
a folder.
Note that if I change the file association for the.jpg files, not only it
does not fix the problem, but, while the explorer launches the right program
(say Irfanview), it still displays (slowly) the Photoshop icon in the
listing.
I made also the registry change to have 2K icons cached, without success.
I played with the "tools_options_display" setting as well : no thumbnails.
same result.
I understand that Windows handles the .JPG files in a special way : it
displays the "exif" information (size, camera,..) in the status bar. Is that
the reason ?
How tell it not to act like that for .JPG files ?

Thanks for your help,

Michel.

Hello Michel,

| Displaying the folders that contain .JPG is very slow...

| The file listing itself is very fast (listing mode),
| but every single photoshop icon needs...

Are you saying that in Windows Explorer, in File-List mode, the icon
to the left of each filename.JPG is rendered as the actual .JPG itself,
or is rendered as a high-resolution icon from the Photoshop application,
or does any of the above occur while displaying the folders that contain
..JPG files whilst using the Photoshop application?

is rendered as the regular icon of Photoshop application, like a mp3 file
would show the icon of Winamp, or a .txt file show the notepad icon. Just
normal, except that these little icons appear, one at a time, so slowly,
while the hard disk works a lot and the cpu is used at 100%

I finally did not insist to find what could happen. Just uninstalled
photoshop (5 LE), and reinstalled it without assiociating the .jpg files
with it. Everything is now working well (.jpg files associated with windows
telecopy and images viewer).

Thanks for your interest in my question,

Michel.
