Default Slow file transfers during Remote Desktop

I've been searching around, and I can't seem to find an answer to this
problem. I have 2 computers connected through a linksys router. I am
able to remote desktop between the 2 pc's just fine (they both have xp
pro). The connection is silky smooth except when I try to access
files from the other pc. Things just grind to a halt just trying to
view folders on the other pc through windows explorer, nevermind
actually trying to copy and paste something. But this was not always
the case, I remember a time when remote desktop used to work like a
charm. I know I haven't changed my settings so this must be something
microsoft did, probably in a patch during windows update. I know it
has nothing to do with my router setup because my friends have the
same exact problem, and most of them don't even have a router (just 2
pc's connected directly with a crossover cable). Some of us do, and
some of us don't have any kind of firewall running, still the same
problem. I would really appreciate it if anyone can shed some light
on this situation, cuz right now I don't even bother using RD for file
transfers anymore, I stick with ftp programs. FTP transfer are nice
and fast. Keep in mind that YES I can actually view and transfer files
between the pc's using RD, but it's just really really slow, and we're
talking 2 pc's on the same network in most cases, so I know it's not a
bandwith problem. Amd I don't mean a little bit slow, I mean windows
explorer freezes for like over 45 seconds just trying to read inside a
folder that has like only 3 files in it. I hope you guys can help,
thank you.

File transfers in a Remote Desktop session are slow... This is by
design as the RDP protocol is not optimized for file transfer (it is
optimized for video performance)...

And since when has this been "by design"? Because I used to always
have fast file transfers through Remote Desktop. Something happened
somewhere along the way in 2003, I'm not sure if it was a windows
update patch or what, but definitely something happened to slow down
the transfers. Judging by your answer, I guess I'm shit out of luck,
oh well, back to using FTP.

This isn't a problem per se... This is by design....
