Slow network connection

I recently set up a small office network. I had 3 new computers that I
had to migrate the data back to and 1 PC that just had the windows 98
to XP upgrade. All have the same NIC ie 3com, and all are connected to
the file server. My question is only the PC with the upgrade has mind
numbingly slow network access. I swaped NIC's to see if this is the
problem. I also tried hard coding the IP adresses on all the PC's to
see if that might be the issue.

The network setup is:
all PC's including the file server are connected through a Linksys 8
port routerwhich is then connected to a Cisco 678 DSL modem to the
internet, The internet connection for all is ok, The PC in question is
a PIII 500, and has a slower network connection than the PII 450. are
there any settings in the PC that might affect this connection? Or is
this an issue of the Win 98 to XP upgrade?

Thanks

Since upgrading my client machine from XP Home to XP Professional my network connection to Great Plains (using a Pervasive SQL Client) has been incredibly slow. I've examined all of the network connections (both in XP and in Pervasive SQL) and nothing jumps out at me or corrects the problem. Any other thoughts???

Slow network connection

Hi, I have set up a network at home and I am having a
problem with the network connection taking five to ten
minutes before they will see each other after startup.
Once they connect there is no problem with transferring
data.

The network consists of a 466 Celeron, with 256Mb of ram
running XP pro as the server and setup with two NIC's
bridged, one connected to another XP pro machine and the
other to a Win 98SE machine. The server connects directly
to a ADSL USB modem and is set up for ICS. The modem
seems to take just as long to connect to the ISP, but
once it's connected there is no problem with download
speed.

Both network and internet connection problems seem to be
one in the same. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Charles

do you have static ip address (do you specify what IP
address to use) or do you let windows get an ip to use..
i have the same setup (except with a modem) and i noticed
that if i assigned IP address myself (192.168.0.1 for
Internet Sharing Computer, and 192.168.0.4 and
192.168.0.9 for my other computers (set the default
gateway to the IP of internet connection sharing
computer) now i see them straight away after bootup...
but the first time i had to wait 10 minutes for it to
pick up the other computers (i think it stores IP address
for computers in registry)... also instead of using
computer names use the ip address like this ->
\\192.168.0.9 type it in the address bar of my computer
or any folder, it should show the what that computer has
shared..

I have a home network with three computers. Two of them
run Windows 98 and one was just upgraded to Windows XP.
The connection from Windows XP to other computers is
extremely slow while the connection from the other
computers with each other or to the Windows XP computer
is fast?

Your router should have a tech support page, or go to
linksys.com and use there networking help page. I have the
same hookup with top speed

You got it right!! There appears to be something in XP
that makes it look through everything on the network when
you try to get something off another computer. Was not
present in 98. I hope someone can come up with a
solution to this problem. I am working with this on my
office newtork and it is NOT a network problem, including
wiring, routers, hubs, firewalls, etc. adinfinitum.
