Default That slow network file copy thing revisited

Yes, I know everyone is complaining about how slow Vista is to copy large
files over a network to non-Vista machines but I am not so sure that the
following benchmarking has been done. The following results relate to
copying a folder of about 2,000 files (total about 30MB) over the network:

1. Perform copy on Vista machine - from Vista to server: 2 hours
2. Perform copy on Vista machine - from server to Vista: 7 minutes
3. Perform copy on server machine - from Vista to server: 20 seconds
3. Perform copy on server machine - from server to Vista: 20 seconds

So if the copies are initiated on the non-Vista machine they perform as you
would hope and expect. It seems that it's only when the copy is initiated
on the Vista machine that things slow down - and I mean really slow down.
This eliminates problems with hardware such as cabling and NIC or router
issues which I naturally turned to first when the problem arose.

I have read all the suggested solutions to this problem and have tried them
all to no avail. Some even made the problem worse. It just must boil down
to a systemic problem with Vista and large(ish) file copy protocol handling
that I certainly hope is fixed _before_ we have to wait for SP1...

And loving it,

I did a similar exercise with Vista against XP and against a NAS device
and found the push copies from Vista to be anomalously slow. I didn't
keep the figures for the tests once I found the problem but the pattern
is familiar.

I have not experienced particularly slow copying, but I have experienced
file corruption apparently caused by Vista when using files via network from
USB HD connected to XP machine. When copying large numbers of large files, I
sometimes get a "insufficient quota" unexpected error message (even though
quotas are disabled) and then it refuses to copy any more files via the
network to the XP machine until rebooted, and the files it has copied become
corrupted.
