Re: Slow start up due to AVG 8.0

AV has to scan every program before it is allowed to execute.
It will necessarily take additional time to do this.

As to whether or not a 4 to 1 increase in time is normal, I don't
know. Maybe someone else can do comparisons for you.

Look under Tools/Advanced Settings/Schedules and make sure that you haven't
selected "Action based......On computer start-up."

Is this a new computer? If an old computer - you were running without AV
protection?? If so you are likely infected with one, or more, bits of
badware.

And somehow none of it showed its ugly face UNTIL Harry installed AVG,
right???

You have either a reading problem or a retention problem. I'm being

It does not matter; The money is gone! The available alternatives are free.

It only delays the inevitable removal of AVG.

I note your comments and point out that NONE of the alternatives are
in my opinion, better than AVG. That is not to say AVG is an impressiv
peice of Antivirus software, I rate it very low on the list. Howeve
it IS better than Avira Free, which rates lower than AVG free on th
list of next to useless programs, why should he trade down fro
something he has paid for just because your alternative is free. Als
Spyware removers are just that, they remove infections. An anti-viru
is supposed to prevent infection

I have seen no indication in Harry's posts that he believes he has a
infected computer. An infection usually manifests itself in ways othe
than a slow boot.

He came to this forum seeking advice not to be told he is an idiot for
not doing what he has been told to do. A lot of advice given so far has
been based on people pushing their own opinions, not listening to the
problem,.

Thx Norm, you are right, I have read all the comments/suggestions, but none
has so far solved the problem.
BTW, what is your suggestion for a top notch AV program, free or otherwise?

Free and otherwise (I finally paid for it): Avira

Free version has a "nag screen" about buying the pro version that is
very obnoxious but you can disable it:

http://www.elitekiller.com/files/dis...ntivir_nag.htm

Free (I never tried the registered version): Avast

Stay with AVG. It isn't as bad as is suggested, why throw your mone
away. Did you check the startup options? Is it doing a scan on boot?
I like Avast, it seems to work well for a lot of people on the forum.
All A/V programs add to your start time. I also use Firefox wit
No-Script addon. It's a pain in the backside sometimes, a bit like UA
but well worth it to avoid the drive -by nasties and malware such a
Antivirus 2009. Take look and see what else is loading at boot. Yo
could also look at Brinks Tutorials on improving start-up times. I kno
when I first joined the Forums I had problems with slow boot-up an
these resolved it for me

Uninstall then reinstall using the "custom" option and uncheck the "link
scanner" (you don't need it). That module has been a royal pain in the @ss
since it appeared and will most definitely cause slow startups.
