Slow system performance

Posted: 07-14-2003, 04:46 PM
Hi All:

I bought a Dell Inspiron 5100 with Intel P4 2.66 GHz
processor very recently. But I have chosen only 256 MB RAM
in one DIMM so that I can upgrade the second DIM later on
with 512 or 1GB RAM. But I found that my system is
noticbly slow when I try to open files
by double clicking them. I guess it is taking a lot of
time to find the correct file association and subsequently
open the application. E.g Pdf files.

So my question is: Is 256 MB RAM good enough for Windows
XP systems or do we need atleast 512MB for satisfactory
performance. Please share your experiences

Thanks,
Suresh.

First clean up the computer: run Disk Cleanup. From the Run command,
type: %temp% [enter]. This opens the windows temp file so you can make
sure everything is deleted. There might be one or two files in use that
cannot be deleted. Run Disk Defragmentor. This might take some time if
it has not been done recently.

Run SpyBot and/or Ad-Aware and remove spyware and malware.

From the Run command, type: msconfig [enter]. Select the Startup Tab.
Examine each entry and uncheck those that you do not need. Use this
site to help identify what these are:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php Note which
applications use the startups you uncheck. Open each noted application
and from preferences or options or tools, uncheck any box that says
"start this program when windows boots".

Open Device Manager and verify that you do not have any problem devices,
or from Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Information,
verify that there are no problem devices or device conflicts.

From a Command Prompt type: sfc \scannow. Have your installation CD
handy in case SFC wants it. This will check all of the system files for
corruption or version errors and replace those if necessary.

Do a complete (all files, not just Windows) virus scan.

See if this helps.
