SmartConnect problem

with what appears to be a Windows XP OS problem.
I've been trying to delete the following BellSouth
internet connection software: BellSouth FastAccess
Connection Manager, BroadJump Client Foundation and
BroadJump CorrectConnect Engine, but keep going around in
circles as I get messages that parts of the software are
currently in use. A Ctrl-ALT-Del shows that no other apps
are running.
My machine is tortuously SLOW and when I shut it down, I
get an error message "End Program SmartConnect" window
and "this program is not responding". Which tells me that
SmartConnect is the program that is running in the
background somewhere, even though I can't see where it is,
and is probably the reason that I can't delete the
BellSouth software. Surprise, surprise, there are 2 files
in the C:\program files\bellsouth\connectionmanager
directory called SmartConnectProxy.dll and
SmartConnectProxy.tlb.
BellSouth tells me this is not their problem, that it's an
XP problem and that Microsoft must advise how to stop the
SmartConnect program from running, so that I can delete
the BellSouth software.
Sorry if this is verbose, but I am hoping that somebody
can help, before I throw my laptop out of the window,
after I've jumped up and down on it, in a complete rage.
Thank you in advance,
Julie
