Socket Error 10055

Posted: 07-24-2004, 11:39 PM
I power down my PC each night in Hibernate mode and then
power it on again the next morning. Every so often I
restart the PC if I've installed a critical update or new
software. After several days of hibernating (maybe 5 or
so) without a restart, I eventually get "Socket Error
10055 - no buffer space" while surfing the web,
processing email, or doing some other function that
requires Internet access. The fix is simple - just
reboot - but this sometimes happens at an inconvenient
time. Is there some way to prevent (or postpone for a
longer period of time) the 10055 error? The Microsoft
Knowledge Base doesn't seem to directly address this
situation. I assume some buffer is gradually getting
filled up over the course of a few days. Any way to flush
it before the error occurs?

Instead of hibernating for several days, turn off your machine.

I do power down my PC when hibernating. Is that what you
mean by turning off my machine, Wes? Powering back up the
next morning after hibernation is much faster than a
regular startup, and I can leave frequently-used
applications running (email, browser, Word, etc.) so they
are ready to use immediately. I'd rather continue daily
hibernations and restart once every 4 or 5 days to clear
the 10055 error than not hibernate at all, but even more,
I'd like to eliminate the error and continue hibernating.

No, Jim, I meant:
Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click Shut
down.

But after some further research I've found that I was thinking you meant
standby.
And you clearly stated hibernate.

In other words; I have no earthly idea. Sorry. ;-(
