Sound problems with XP

I just installed XP home. The Sound is not right. It's intermittently crackly. I have installed all the updates to XP and Media Player 9. I have checked the driver and I also checked the volume levels on my machine. help please.

Did you upgrade ?

If so, did you change your soundcard drivers so that they are XP specific ?

Try unseating the soundcard, and putting it into another PCI slot, away from
the video card.
