Specified port cannot be added. The request is not supported

I'm faced with the above error message on a WindowsXP Media Center
installation. Version 2002 wit Sp2.

- I've checked registry settings of port monitor "localspl.dll".
- I've checked version of localspl.dll
- I've checked wether or not a second version of localspl.dll exists on the
system.
- I'm not connected through a terminal session (at least I assume so).

The thing I'm not able to understand is, that I can add a local port through
"AddPortEx" function of winspool.drv as well as through "XcvData" through a
small test application. The above mentioned error message only appear if the
user creates the local port through Printer & Faxes > Serverproperties > Add
port, or through add priner wizard.

I've read in some ng archives quite similar posts, but none of them has been
solved. Has anybody ever solved the above described issue.

Kind regards, Lela

this depends on the port name. The UI puts greater restraints on port names
than the spooler APIs

port names with "" and \ come to mind first.

Hi Alan,

I've tried several different port names,

Monday
"Monday"
adskflasdöf
"adskflasdöf"
Test
"Test"
"C:\Temp\Test"
C:\Temp\Test
,..........

Before I try to add the new port I've also checked if thoose may already
exists. I've also checked theese port names on other systems wether they're
valid or not and I could add all of this ports on other systems.

Is there any way to get a detailed explanation why this specific behaviour
occur's on this one machine? What are theese greater restraints the UI is
putting on the port name? The point is I found a workaround through adding
the port through a small application which in turn is using the Api's but
nevertheless I'd like to know the reason. All the comments on this issue,
most of them where posted 200-2003, didn't get solved ever.

Kind regards, Lela
