hello, i was wondering how to change my start up and shut
down splash screens to something else. is there an

easy way to do that? i've heard that if you do it
incorrectly that you can harm your operating system.

On previous windows os I have replaced my splash screen with my own
customised one.
Is it still possible in XP as I can't remember how I did it before.
I thought it was Logo.sys & logos.sys, but they do not seem to exist in XP
pro.

This is done completely different in Xp.
You can do this with special programs.
Check out LogonLoader (http://logonloader.danielmilner.com/) or Chameloen
(http://www.geocities.com/outersoftinc/CXP.html)
There are also plenty of customized logons available on the web.
Start here http://software.deviantart.com/details/268/

Be advised that you are essentially changing some important parts of the OS
(in terms of executables etc.) and such changes always potentially carry
some risk.

Simplest and safest by far
Create a bitmap (in paint) 640x480 pixels.
save as 16bit dib and place in c:\windows

edit the line in boot.ini
.... "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
and add /bootlogo /noguiboot on the end

Et voila !
