Start Menu: order of MRU programs

Posted: 11-27-2006, 01:39 PM
How can I deliberately change the order of the shortcuts of the most recently
used programs which are displayed in the first slide of the Start Menu? Where
are they saved in the registry (or anwhere else)? TIA, Sven

Hi Sven Berg,
It is quite simple to assign the order of the programs on the Start Menu's
initial program window. I can not think of any advantage to this function,
but that doesn't mean there isn't a perfectly good reason.
I can though, mention that it is very simple to right click on any program
icon and select "Pin to Start Menu". Then you can left click the new icon in
the Start Menu and drag it to your choice of order.
I realize you probably know this, but sometimes these simple things are
overlooked.

Hi again
I meant to say:
It is quite simple to assign the order of the programs on the Start Menu's
initial program window, but I can not tell you how to do this using the Start
Menu's MRU option.
I can not think of any advantage to this function that you want Windows to
perform,
but that doesn't mean there isn't a perfectly good reason.
I can though, mention that it is very simple to right click on any program
icon and select "Pin to Start Menu". Then you can left click the new icon in
the Start Menu and drag it to your choice of order.

You can right-click any item in the MRU list and "Remove from list".

To promote an application up the MRU list, run it more often.

If there are items that you just want to be always available, "Pin to
Start Menu" them.

That does what I wanted to be done. As a non native speaker, I previously
misunderstood "pin to start menu" as "attach to startup". So much the better
my decision to run an English version of Vista. Many thanks again, Sven

Items are now easily sent to the Quick Launch (for QL fans) as well. There
is a new Place on Quick Launch context menu choice.

One of the reasons I use a 6 line taskbar (hidden) even though I no longer
need the tasks area in IE7. All 40+ windows I use are now controllable on
fewer windows. I have noticed that I can have far fewer tasks running in
Vista64 than in XP X64 before they start having eratic behaviour.

I am happy to say that the context menu item was my one easily visible
contribution to Vista (other than text corrections). It came about in an
executive chat I was in with a few other MVP's. I asked a very senior MS
person why not do it? and two weeks later the next interim build had it.
They do listen.

Agreed ... I don't know if I was the only one who sent in the feedback, but
I requested the RCTRL+RSHIFT+ENTER shortcut for program elevation from the
search bar on the start menu and the shift+right-click copy as path function
on files, and they made it into RTM
