Run: msconfig and go to startup tab and de-select those programs you don't
want running.

Hi Will,

You can uncheck them in msconfig/startup. To remove them once checked and
to remove the icon in the notification area:

Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup (Line 148)

And/or...remove the runkeys from here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

What are the program that have to come up at startup. I
have a new computer and it takes forever to startup. My
desktop startup quickly because I have minimized the
startup configuration.

It's different for every system. If you have a computer that you bought at
a store, like a Dell, Compaq, Gateway, HP, etc., it can have dozens of
startup items on it. OTOH, if you have a home-built computer like mine, you
might only have a half-dozen startup items.

Follow the links near the bottom of this page to help you decipher some of
the startup files you're seeing:
http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/

Also, find and download two programs called Ad-Aware v.6 and Spybot. Do the
online update of those two programs and run them... they may help you
eliminate some spyware programs that you don't need running at startup. You
might be able to find them in the freeware section of www.webattack.com

Several ways to do this. Here's just a few of them:

** Check the program's menus for a way to disable it at startup. These may
be tucked away in the right- or left-click menus of the tray icons. Or in the
menus of the main program.

** Use Start> Run> MSCONFIG and on the Startup page, uncheck the boxes of
programs you do not want loading at startup.

** Check the Startup folder in the Start menu for any program shortcuts.
Delete the ones you don't want by right clicking on the them and selecting
Delete.

Default Startup

To cut short a v long story on startup I have XP home edition and XP setup tp choose from. I've tried to delete setup from boot log but it won't let me and then says it is read only. When I search the boot log file I cannot find it
