Still A Java Problem (Newbie)

Posted: 09-15-2006, 11:13 PM
First let me say thanks to all those that have been trying to help me get
started. I have tried to instal Sun Java to use with Firefox but have not
been able to do it.

Is there a Linux browser that comes Java enabled?

If I remember when I tried this way back with Mandrake it had Netscape (I
beleive it was 7) and you could install a java plugin within Netscape I may
be bad wrong on this.

Or is there an installer that would make things easire to install?

Please continue to Help - I haven't given up yet. I want to eventualy get
reid of all MicroShaft. I have a lot to learn before I can as I also run a
Web and Mail Server on an Old Proliant ML370 (G1)

There's no magic involved here. Assuming you've installed java from rpm,
it would have put the plugin in
/home/<your_user_name>/.mozilla/plugins directory (if you were wise to
check "install Mozilla plugin" during installation). Open that dir and
look for a link named libjavaplugin_oji.so pointing to
/usr/java/jre1.5.0_xx/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so. If it's not
there, you have to add one. You can drag it in Konqueror and select
"link here" or use the ln command. When you upgrade JRE to newer
version, you need to point that link to the new directory, e.g. from
/usr/java/jre1.5.0_06 to /usr/java/jre1.5.0_07.

It's enabled by default in Firefox. To verify, open Firefox and go to
Edit>Preferences>Content and see that the "Enable Java" box is ticked.

Ms Penguin, has just come in and peered over my shoulder. She muttered,
freedom; one tool for each task and is off to the kitchen to cook fish.

Where is the problem you are having? True you have to download the file
from Sun and read how to install it.It is a rpm wrapped up in a licence
agreement which needs clicking on.

I remember a few years back when there was a java.xpi file that you just
opened from the file menu in Mozilla and it automagically installed
java. I don't know if this still exists. I seem to recall getting it
from a netscape FTP server.
