Strange browser problem

Recently installed Vista 64 on a new machine. Kept getting cannot connect to
internet using IE, no problem with Firefox. Last evening installed update to
Firefox now I get the message "can't establish a connection." IE work just
fine. I've checked security and nothing is set to prevent connection. I've
tried the Firefox site and did not find anything helpful for troubleshooting
this problem.

You wouldn't have made IE your default browser, would you?

No. Firefox was default browser when it was working. When it stopped and I
was able to use IE it was still the default. Now I've made it the default.
Still getting that irritating message from Firefox that it is unable to
connect. I suspect it is something to do with security, but I can't figure it
out.
