Stupid highlighted"square"around selected desktop icons!

Whoever thought that one up must have been smokin somethang....
I know what I have selected without the need for a stupid highlighted
whatever around the icon.
What's it supposed to do, let you see that you selected???

Yes. And it's been around at least since Windows 3.0 I imagine.

Open the start menu, type SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe in the search box,
then click on it in the results. Under Performance, click on the Settings
button. Uncheck "Show translucent selection rectangle" on the Visual Effects
tab (Apply>OK).
