Suitable Virus Protection for XPe

For virus protection Sygate Security Agent was included with my t5710. Why
does Sygate not require frequent definition updates as Symmantec's antivirus
solution? Is it as good as SAV (I understand this may be subjective)?

Thank you for an light that you can shine on this,
William

Personally I would be inclined to run screaming from any antivirus agent
that does not regularly update. That said, I have never produced an XPe
image with antivirus - either they were tiny builds not vulnerable to a
lot of modern virii and EWF protected in any case, or Management decided
it was not necessary as the boxes will not be exposed to the internet.

HP does not endorse or recommend an antivirus product. The Sygate
Security Agent is supplied as a client firewall. A client firewall can
be used to block many worm infection mechanisms, and would therefore
have some effect against some viruses. Sygate Security Agent should not
be considered a virus protection product.

For example, use your t5710 to visit eicar.com. Download the eicar test
virus. Note that you can download the file in its many permutations. If
you can download this harmless file, then you can download the more
dangerous viruses.

I would speculate that one reason HP does not endorse an antivirus
package for the t5710 is the need for frequent updates. If you are
using the t5710 in an environment which permits users to surf the web
or access their external web-based email accounts, then expect to see
spyware and viruses on the t5710.
