NICK: You betcha you can. Go to run type REGEDIT select
selective start,go to system start, deselect all except
for your anti-virus prog. You will see a world of
difference. If you want to go farther run diskclean. It
has function to compress old files. Remove all the progs
that are not regularly used. Back them on a CD or
remember where from the net you got them. At 256 you are
going to fight this problem constantly with XP as the OS.

Bronco means to go to Start>Run type: msconfig Select Startup Tab
and uncheck programs you don't want to
start.

I'm running XP home on a Toshiba laptop and recently I've
had a performance problem. When I go to task manager abd
look at processes I find a process named MSIEX16.exe
running. If I close it everything goes back to normal.
I've searched to find the file and can't find it (search
included hidden and system files). I also have Norton
system works 2004 running and a firewall. Any ideas what
it is and how to stop it??

>I use Internet Explorer which Help/About tells me is
(Version 6.0 with SP1; Q824145; Q330994; Q832894). I
searched my C: (XP Home) and didn't find that file
either. Internet Explorer is IExplore.exe and on this
machine is in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer.

I have no idea why you cannot find a file that taskmanager
says is there - that seems odd. I ran MSIEX16.exe through
Google and got no returns - usually a virus or problem
program will get a bunch of hits.

Virus programs are written to find viruses but there are
other sorts of infections. Don't know if this will help
but you could try Ad-Aware and Spybot - both can be
located via Google - update and run weekly and maybe they
will find something. SpywareBlaster is also worth
having. There are also on-line scans at:

http://security.symantec.com
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
http://www.coledata.com/virusalert.htm
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/misc/av.php

and a trojan scan at:
http://www.trojanscan.com/trojanscan/scanner.htm

Stab in the dark: msiex16.exe is an obsolete (16 bit)
version of Internet Explorer and is incompatible with the
XP operating system (32 bit)????? This might explain why
it doesn't work correctly but not why you can't find it.

Greetings...

If I may... if it's possible that the file was misspelled, or is
running as a slightly diff name, I found the following:

msiexec16.exe at:

http://www.liutilities.com/products/...ary/msiexec16/

which is a trojan.
